In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community.
During the financial year, Save Our Lands and River (SOLAR) CIC continued its mission to protect and enhance the environmental quality of local lands, green spaces, and the River Thames corridor across Richmond, Kingston, and Hounslow. The year was defined by the campaign against Thames Water’s proposed Teddington Direct River Abstraction (TDRA) scheme, with SOLAR leading community engagement, environmental advocacy, and public awareness initiatives to ensure local voices were represented throughout the decision-making process. Advocacy and Scrutiny:A significant focus was providing expert-led scrutiny of the TDRA proposal. We engaged directly with Thames Water, Government departments, regulators, and elected representatives to challenge the scheme’s environmental impact, financial value, and long-term sustainability. SOLAR provided residents with guidance to understand the proposals and support in responding to Thames Water’s statutory consultation. These efforts were instrumental in achieving a record 14,000 responses to the public consultation, with the overwhelming majority stemming from SOLAR-led engagement. Beyond consultation, we challenged Government ministers on policy inconsistencies and pressed the Environment Agency for transparency regarding PFAS testing and treatment standards. Community Mobilisation and Awareness:Community engagement remained the bedrock of our activities. We helped residents navigate Thames Water’s land-interest questionnaires and coordinated high-profile actions, including a major gathering at The Wharf in Teddington attended by over 200 residents, local businesses, and councillors. Collaborative demonstrations of opposition alongside local MPs and councillors further amplified our reach. To boost public understanding, SOLAR utilised media platforms including BBC London News and LBC to reach wider audiences. We also promoted the Independent Water Commission’s review of the water sector by Cunliffe to highlight the need for policy reform. Educational efforts included the "Thames in Teddington" event and the unveiling of Withering Time, a collaborative art installation with Richmond upon Thames College students that highlighted the threats to the river corridor. Partnerships and Governance:Working collaboratively with environmental groups, river users, and community organisations remains core to our approach. Throughout the year, we supported the campaign for official bathing water status for the Ham and Kingston stretch of the Thames and contributed to the "Mayors for a Drinkable Thames" initiative. The Board maintained high standards of corporate governance, ensuring all statutory filings, financial reporting, and director verification obligations were completed transparently. As a CIC, our activities provided a tangible community benefit by enabling residents to engage meaningfully in environmental policy, fostering civic participation, public health, and the long-term stewardship of the River Thames.
